In Florida, people have the right to propose amendments to the Florida constitution through the initiative petition process. Sponsors of these initiatives must obtain a required number of verified/valid signatures in order for the initiative to go on the General Election ballot.  The total number of verified signatures required is calculated as eight percent of the votes cast in the last presidential election.  More information regarding petitions and can be found by visiting the Florida Secretary of State 

There is also a signature distribution requirement. Signatures must be gathered from voters in at lease half of Florida’s congressional districts.  These signatures must be verified and remain valid until the submission deadline of February 1st in the general election year.  More information on Florida’s petition process, including a list of current initiatives, can be found on Florida Division of Elections.

AS OF March 1, 2026,  the cost of signature verification of an initiative petition is $3.13 per petition pursuant to Florida Statute 100.371(11)b.
